Leslie Odom Jr. was born in Queens, N.Y. While growing up, he attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, which prepared him for a career with music. At the age of 17, Odom Jr. was cast as Paul in the Tony-winning musical called Rent, which tells the story of a group of poor young artists struggling to survive on the fringes of late '80s New York. He also performed in the concert version of the 2001 musical titled Dreamgirls and the 2012 musical, Leap of Faith. In 2014, Odom Jr. worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda on a new production of the musical called Tick, Tick…Boom! This collaboration with Miranda continued the following year when Odom Jr. was cast as the role of Aaron Burr in the musical sensation, Hamilton. The role earned him a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and a shared Grammy Award with the rest of the cast for Best Musical Theater Album. He received additional nominations from the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical and a Lucille Lortell Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. In 2014, Leslie Odom Jr. embarked on a solo recording career with the release of his self-titled debut album, which reached a peak position of No. 1 on the US jazz chart. The album featured covers of "Song for the Asking" by Simon and Garfunkel and "I Know That You Know" by Nat King Cole. Two years later, he released a jazz-inspired Christmas album called Simply Christmas. In addition to his music career, Odom Jr. has appeared on numerous television shows, including CSI: Miami, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, NCIS: Los Angeles, Supernatural, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife and Gotham. He also had a lead role on the NBC musical drama called Smash and the 2017 film, Murder on the Orient Express. In another career highlight, Odom Jr. sang "America the Beautiful" at Super Bowl LII on February 4, 2018.
