The Levellers are an English rock band formed in 1988 as a result of musicians Mark Chadwick and Jeremy Cunningham randomly meeting in a pub one night. The duo added drummer Charlie Heather and fiddler Jon Sevink soon after. Later, Alan Miles joined to play harmonica, guitar, mandolin and provide backup vocals.
Their first contract, in 1989, was with French label Musidec. They released their first full-length album, A Weapon Called the Word, in 1990. This album went platinum with the first single, “World Freak Show.”
The Levellers lost Alan Miles soon after the release. Replaced by Simon Friend, the only other change to the lineup is the later addition of Matt Salvage on keyboard. The band signed with the label China in 1991, embracing their folk and punk sounds with their second album, Levelling the Land. This album helped the Levellers land a deal in the United States with Elektra Records.
The Levellers hit the festival circuit in the mid-1990s; their appearance at the Glastonbury Festival drew one of the highest attended crowds in event history. The band’s success allowed them to buy an abandoned factory in Brighton, which served as an office, fan club, rehearsal space and recording area. Now creating and recording on their terms, the band’s first album was Zeitgeist with the notable single “Hope Street.”
The band spent the second half of the 1990s touring Europe and the United Kingdom. In September 2000, they released the album Hello Pig, enjoying some commercial success. They played shows in the United Kingdom and North America following the release of Hello Pig.
The band signed with Eagle Records and added keyboardist Matt Savage in 2002. After recording Green Blade Rising, they toured the United Kingdom and later hit the festival circuit. In 2008, the band celebrated their 20th-anniversary and released Letters From The Underground. They also released Greatest Hits in September 2014, with a video that celebrated their 25 years together.
