The Liberty Bowl game originally invited the winner of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. This Trophy was awarded to the best college football representative from the US Military Academy (Army), the US Naval Academy (Navy) or the US Air Force Academy. For a decade, the winner of Conference USA earned an automatic bid. In 2014, an agreement was reached with the Southeastern Conference or SEC. Now, one at-large university is extended an invitation to play against one of the top six-rated teams from the SEC.
