Lion King New York Tickets
The Lion King New York TicketsBased on the beloved classic 1994 animated film from Disney, The Lion King brings to life the story of Simba and Nala with dazzling sets, colorful costumes and the engrossing soundtrack by Elton John. Featuring hit songs like "Circle of Life," "Hakuna Matata" and "I Just Can’t Wait to Be King," the musical reprises most of the classic music from the film and adds a few new songs from Hans Zimmer, Lebo M and other artists. The newly recorded soundtrack is heavily infused with African instruments and influences to reflect the story’s setting.
King of BroadwayThe idea for a musical was conceived shortly after the success of the feature film in 1994. With a book from Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, The Lion King was designed specifically for the stage with actors yielding props and tools to animate their costumes. New songs and entirely new scenes were added to augment the story. After a brief tryout at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, the musical made its official Broadway debut at the New Amsterdam Theater on Nov. 13, 1997, with Julie Taymor as director and lead costume designer. An instant success, The Lion King would go on to become the top grossing Broadway musical of all times with more than $1.6 billion in sales and 9,000 performances. Following a successful first year, The Lion King would sweep to victory during award season. The original Broadway production led all musicals at the 1998 Tony Awards. Out of its 11 nominations, it won six times, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. Taymor made history as the first woman to ever receive a Tony for best direction. Following its London debut, the musical won two Laurence Olivier awards for Best Theatre Choreography and Best Costume Design out of eight total nominations. It also received a 1999 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
