The British four-piece all-girl band Little Mix took shape in 2011. The band is comprised of Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall. Little Mix was established specifically for The X Factor's eighth series in 2011. They became the first group to claim victory in the competition. Following their win, they inked a deal with Syco Records, Simon Cowell's label. Their first album,DNA, arrived in the fall of 2012. It scored in the Top 5 in eight countries, including No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 2 in the U.K. This feat made Little Mix the first girl band since The Pussycat Dolls to land in the U.S. Top 5 with their premiere album. They additionally claimed the highest debut U.S. chart ranking by a British girl band, shattering the record previously retained by the Spice Girls.

In early 2012, Little Mix graced the stage of the National Television Awards and did their rendition of En Vogue's "Don't Let Go (Love)." They also joined judges Tulisa Contostavios and Gary Barlow on stage to take home the Best Talent Show award that had been earned by The X Factor. In the spring of 2012, Little Mix reportedly inked a deal with Bravado and Vivid to put out trademark merchandise like accessories, games, dolls and puzzles. They also revealed a kid's clothing line, targeting 7-13 year olds.
They unveiled their debut track, "Wings" on July 1 at the T4 on the Beach concert. The single netted the No. 1 spot on the U.K. Singles Chart. In the late summer of 2012, the group issued their autobiography, Ready to Fly. Their first album, DNA, dropped in November 2012. "Going Nowhere" was co-written by Nicola Roberts and is included on the debut album. In October, the title track, "DNA," was released. And, at the beginning of 2013, Little Mix signed on with Columbia Records. In the U.S., "Wings" was selected as their debut single, which dropped in February 2013. "Change Your Life," also dropped in February 2013, took the No. 12 spot on the U.K. Singles Chart. A month later, "How Ya Doin?" came out as their fourth release from their inaugural effort. Little Mix revealed in an interview with Digital Spy magazine (March 2013) that their sophomore album would "have a more R&B sound." Nelson said, "I personally want to put a lot more dancey stuff in there. As in, one of the songs that comes on in a club that makes you want to dance. Not that David Guetta sound, but more R&B - a bit like Eve and Gwen Stefani's 'Let Me Blow Ya Mind.'" On the U.K. Singles Chart, "How Ya Doin'?" scored the No. 57 slot on the U.K. Singles Chart. In its third week, the song climbed to No. 16. It settled in on the charts cumulatively for seven weeks. More than 100,000 copies were sold of "How Ya Doin'?" in the U.K. Additionally, the single yielded the No. 55 slot on the Irish Singles Chart in April 2013. It then soared to No. 26. On the Scottish Singles Chart, the single climbed to No. 16. In the fall of 2013, a track called "Move" debuted as the lead-off single from Little Mix's sophomore studio album. It appeared on iTunes the first week of November 2013. Their sophomore album, Salute, dropped in November 2013 in the U.K. and came out in the U.S. in early February 2014.
