It was the Instagram post nobody wanted to see: “Hey guys I’ve decided to cancel the Big Tour.”

What was supposed to be a sweeping 35-date North American jaunt in support of Chance the Rapper’s debut album, 2019’s Billboard-charting The Big Day, was over after just five shows. For folks in San Francisco, in Cleveland, in Ottawa, there would be no “Do You Remember,” “Cocoa Butter Kisses” or “No Problem” on the live stage. The recently wed Chance, now the father of two daughters, was applying the brakes in order to “be with family, make some new music and develop my best show to date.”

His hardcore fans, those who had been listening since those early mixtape releases — 10 Day, Acid Rap — were distraught. They’d have to make do with the occasional Rhythm + Flow episode or YouTube binge.

Imagine their delight when it was announced that Chance would appear at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March, joining an already star-studded lineup that includes Gwen Stefani, Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, NCT 127, Khalid and more. The Chicagoan is scheduled to take the NRG Park stage on Fri., March 6.

Joining Chance in the Houston Rodeo lineup is R&B/rap phenom Lizzo, fresh off her prize-winning haul at the 63rd Grammy Awards. The Time magazine Entertainer of the Year and Rolling Stone cover girl took home top honors for Best Pop Solo Performance (“Truth Hurts”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Jerome”) and Best Urban Contemporary Album (Cuz I Love You). Her major label debut spent more than 33 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. She is set to perform on Black Heritage Day, Fri., March 13.

Rounding out the latest Houston additions is DJ/EDM star Marshmello. From his humble SoundCloud beginnings to collabs with the likes of Khalid and Kane Brown (both of whom will appear at the Houston Rodeo), the man otherwise known as Christopher Comstock is riding high after the 2019 release of Joytime III, which rose to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. He will make his Houston Rodeo debut on Fri., March 20.

Last year, the event — featuring everything from concerts, calf scrambles and carnival rides to wine gardens, BBQ contests and bareback riding — drew more than 2.5 million visitors. George Strait (with Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen) set a single-session NRG Stadium attendance record of 80,108.
