Elizabeth Clark Phair AKA Liz Phair is an American singer songwriter and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. Phair released her first studio album, Exile in Guyville, over 25 years ago, in 1993, and became a part of music history. Rolling Stone Magazine called Exile in Guyville one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Since then, Phair has gone on to release five more studio albums: WhipSmart in 1994, Whitechocolatespaceegg in 1998, the self-titled Liz Phair in 2003, Somebody's Miracle in 2005 and Funstyle in 2010. Phair's most popular song, Why Can't I Breathe was used in several movies, including the popular Jennifer Garner film 13 Going on 30.
Angry Girl Music
Liz Phair's monotone rock ballads and cutting lyrics are practically synonymous with late 90s third wave feminism. Her freshman album, Exile in Guyville, was embraced by feminists because of it's sex-positive lyrics and themes of female liberation and self-sufficiency. She continued the trend with WhipSmart, gaining the attention of more established alternative rockers like Alanis Morissette, who Phair would eventually go on tour with. Shortly before releasing Whitechocolatespaceegg, Phair went on tour as part of Lilith Fair, officially branding herself as a feminist indie-rocker. Unfortunately, her record label was pushing for songs with less explicit and controversial lyrics that would allow her more radio play. In 2003, she caved to their demands with the bubblegum pop-rock album Liz Phair. While this album saw plenty of commercial success, it alienated Phair's fan base and set the performer up for an uphill battle going into Somebody's Miracle. Phair returned to her 'Angry Girl Rock' roots for her last two albums, much to the relief of her fans.
