This London rugby team formed from the ashes of the old Hampstead Football Club, after the top-level side separated into two teams, the other half being Harlequins FC. The waspies took their name in 1867 and their established status saw them invited to become one of the founding members of the Rugby Football Union. Throughout the early 1930s, the popular club cultivated a reputation as one of the more talented English teams with the help of Neville Compton, a player who would eventually go on to become club president.
In recent years, the club's reputation has elevated once again under the direction of coach Shaun Edwards, credited with creating the Blitz Defence. The team has also moved to a new ground in Adams Park and had huge success with their triumphant 48-30 win over long-term rivals Bath at Madejski Stadium, helping them on the way to their European Challenge Cup win in 2002/3. Now headed by experienced captain Chris Bell, this fearsome yellow and black team continue to dominate rugby union leagues.
