The Kings were founded as an expansion team in 1966. The Kings achieved a degree of success early in their history but failed to break through in the playoffs. That track record persisted even after they acquired Gretzky. The Kings reached one conference finals with Gretzky on the roster before having to rebuild the team after his departure. The current golden era for the Kings began when they built their roster around goalkeeper Jonathan Quick and Anze Kopitar. By 2012, coach Darryl Sutter led the Kings to their first Stanley Cup. The Kings repeated the feat in 2014, winning three consecutive deciding games to advance to the finals against the New York Rangers.
