The Los Angeles Kings is a professional hockey team based in Los Angeles. The team is 8th in the National Hockey League Pacific Division and is coached by Todd McLellan. The team was founded in 1967 and played its games at the Forum in Inglewood, California. At the start of the 1999-2000 season, the team moved its games to the STAPLES center in downtown Los Angeles. In 1993, the Los Angeles Kings took a financial hit and filed bankruptcy in 1995 under the team’s owner Bruce McNall. Despite having brought star Wayne Gretzky to the L.A. team, McNall couldn’t recover. The team was then acquired by Philip Anschutz and regained its strength in 2009 onwards. The Los Angeles Kings team plays its games at the STAPLES center in downtown Los Angeles. The stadium is a multi-arena that is home to hockey games, basketball games and concerts. John McLellan is the Los Angeles Kings coach. He was brought on as head coach on April 16th, 2019. McLellan is the 29th coach of the Kings team. Before the Kings, McLellan coached the Oilers in Edmonton and the Sharks in San Jose. McLellan was born in Saskatchewan and played in the NHL before an injury put an end to his career.
One of the most notable players from the Los Angeles Kings was Wayne Gretzky. In 1988, the Kings team acquired Wayne Gretzky. It was one of the most stunning trades in sports history. Gretzky played for the Kings from 1988 to 1996. During his years with the Kings, he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the team’s most valuable player. Other notable players were, like Gretzky, also from the Edmonton Oilers. These were Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski. Justin Williams, another Kings star, played during the 2014 Stanley Cup win. Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar are additional names that deserve mention.
The Los Angeles Kings team was strong during its 2009 to 2014 years, culminating in two Stanley Cup wins. The players had a nine-game winning streak and played strong rivals like the Vancouver Canucks in 2010 and the San Jose Sharks.
