Lulu Biography - Scottish Star Releases First Album in Ten Years
Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Lennoxtown, Scotland, this singer started her career in the music industry at an early age, joining group The Bellrocks at the age of 12. At only 15 she was signed to Decca Records and released her version of The Isley Brothers 'Shout', which went straight into the charts at number seven. By 1967 she had left Decca for Columbia Records and her single 'The Boat That I Row' aided her return to the charts, followed by 'To Sir, With Love' from the film of the same name which promptly became one of the biggest-selling singles of the year, amassing over 1 million copies. In 1969 she represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest and went on to become the winner with 'Boom Bang-a-Bang', and also scored a number two hit in the charts.
The '70s would see the powerhouse singer record the title song to the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun and work alongside the likes of David Bowie on a number of collaborations. Whilst her direct chart success waned a little in the following years, she would make notable London stage appearances throughout the next decade including a starring role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance and a part as Adrian Mole's mother in the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole. By 1993, after penning her first autobiography, she made her chart comeback with top 20 hit 'Independence' from the album of the same name, and a collaboration with Take That, 'Relight My Fire', which went on to be one of their most distinctive hits. Stints in radio presenting and TV followed into the early '00s, before album Together gave the singer a further top five hit. She released an album of original material, A Little Soul in Your Heart in 2005, but appearances as a contestant on both Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and The Great Comic Relief Bake Off came before her next release. In 2015, she returned with her first album in ten years, Making Life Rhyme to critical acclaim. In celebration of her extraordinary career she tours the UK in 2016.
