Founded in 1946, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) began when the schools that are now known as Ohio University, Butler University, the University of Cincinnati, Wayne State University and Case Western Reserve University partnered to compete in intercollegiate sports. Many schools have come and gone in the conference since then, but hard-fought, high-quality football remains. The MAC conference is centered in the Midwest region of the US and includes mid-sized state and private schools from states like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The conference divided into east/west divisions in 1997 and began its championship game as a matchup between the winner of each division. The annual game occurs on the first Saturday of each December, timed with the other NCAA conference championship games. The games tend to result in high-scoring battles between equally matched teams, such as the 2018 contest between the Buffalo Bulls and Northern Illinois Huskies that ended in a 30 to 29 Huskies victory. The 2016 game between the Ohio Bobcats and Western Michigan Broncos resulted in a final score separated by a single touchdown with the Broncos victorious, 29 to 23.
