Finding Rastafarianism and becoming an international toaster
One of the UK's most influential dancehall DJs (or toasters as they're known in Jamaica!), Macka B takes his name from the Judean rebels the Maccabees. Primarily working with iconic dub producer Mad Professor, Macka B has been known for fusing different styles of reggae since the 1980s. He was born Christopher MacFarlane to Jamaican parents in Wolverhampton. As a kid, he played violin and sang in his school choir, but was further impressed by the reggae sounds of his neighbourhood, which he would come across at house parties and street gatherings. After being made redundant from a factory apprenticeship, MacFarlane devoted more time developing his toasting skills, inspired by early pioneers such as U-Roy, Big Youth and Prince Far I. He later formed his own sound system Exodus and became a Rastaman. On a trip to Jamaica, Macka B won a toasting competition and upon his return to the UK began to feature on local radio stations. Soon after, he met Neil Frasier (the Mad Professor), who agreed to produce his first album. ‘Sign of the Times' was released on Mad Professor's label and hit number one of the UK reggae charts. His following albums would receive similar acclaim as Macka B went on to become an international performer and one of reggae's best loved talents.
