Enjoy the spectacle of the Malaga Bullfighting Festival
Bullfighting is one of Spain’s most beloved and traditional sports, with a 1,300-year-old history and ties to ancient Roman entertainment. It is most renowned in the Andalusia region of Spain, with world-famous festivals taking place in Seville, its capital, and Malaga, the second-largest city in Andalusia. Malaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe, dating back to the 8th century B.C. Not only does Malaga have a rich history, with influences from its Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian periods, which can be seen in its architecture today, but it’s also a beautiful city on the coast which offers many opportunities for nature getaways. Unsurprisingly, Malaga receives a host of tourists every year, especially during bullfighting season, which runs from April to September. Bullfighting in Malaga
Bullfighting has been around for a long time and ingrained in the cultural practices of Andalusia for generations, but it wasn’t until the 18th century, with the building of bullrings across the region, that it began to attract visitors from all over the world. Bullfighters were also elevated to the rank of national heroes. There are over seventy bullrings in the region, varying in size and capacity, with the oldest being the Plaza de Toros de Ronda and the Plaza de Toros La Maestranza de Sevilla, inaugurated in 1784 and 1785. The oldest bullring in Malaga is the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta, which was founded in 1874 and can accommodate 14,000 people. The building was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1976 and an Official Site of Cultural Interest five years later.
