Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical based on the music of the band ABBA, whose members were heavily involved in the creation process. The musical opens with the audience meeting Sophie, who is preparing for her wedding to her fiancé, Sky. Sophie wants one special thing for her wedding, and that is for her father to walk her down the aisle.
Unfortunately, Sophie doesn’t actually know who her father is. She launches her own personal investigation to locate the man she has spent her life wondering about. When she invites the three possible candidates to her wedding, her mother is upset. Adding to the confusion, it turns out that even Sophie’s mother is unsure which man is her daughter’s father. After much emotional upheaval, Sophie and the men decide to consider all three of them her parents.
What follows is an exuberant, heartfelt ending that highlights a long-lost love. The finale concludes with a zesty rock ‘n roll tribute to ABBA.
