Singer-songwriter, actress and producer Mariah Carey rose to fame in 1990 when Columbia Records released her self-titled debut album. After topping the US Billboard 200 for 11 consecutive weeks, she became the first artist to have her first five records reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following her marriage to Tommy Mottola, head of Sony Music, she reached worldwide success with three follow-up albums. Some of her most successful singles include "All I Want for Christmas is You," "Hero," "Without You," "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby." Her single "One Sweet Day" remained at No. 1 for 16 weeks, making it the longest-running No. 1 single in US history. Selling over 200 million records worldwide throughout her career, Carey is currently one of the best-selling musical artists of all time and the third best-selling female artist in the nation.Songbird Supreme
Mariah Carey was born in 1970 in Huntington, New York, to Alfred and Patricia Carey. Alfred was an aeronautical engineer, and Patricia was a vocal coach who occasionally sang opera. Having been named after the song "They Call the Wind Maria" from the Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon, Carey seemed destined for a musical career. Alfred and Patricia divorced when Carey was three years old. Her sister remained with Alfred, and Carey and her brother stayed with Patricia. Carey recalls that, by age 4, she sought solace in music by sneaking a radio under her covers at night. By the time she was in high school, she was composing poetry and setting them to melodies. With training from her mother, she mastered the control of her voice to include a five-octave range and the use of the whistle register. The whistle register is the highest register of the human voice and is above the modal and falsetto registers. This accomplishment would later earn her the title of "Songbird Supreme" by the Guinness World Records. She worked with her friend Gavin Christopher, writing and composing songs in his father's basement. Carey continued her ventures in music after high school while living in a one-bedroom Manhattan apartment she shared with four other girls and worked as a waitress. She became friends with rising pop singer Brenda Starr who took Carey with her to a recording executives' gala along with Carey's demo tape. She gave the tape to Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records. Although Carey later married and divorced Mottola, it would be the demo tape that launched her career.Where can I get Mariah Carey tickets?
