Mariucci Classic History
Held at the end of December or early part of January, the Mariucci Classic is one of the most touted college hockey tournaments every single year thanks to the prestige that these programs bring to the ice. Mariucci Arena has been home to the Golden Gophers and the Mariucci Classic since the early-1990s, making it one of the top places in the country for college hockey thanks to the reputation of the Minnesota program. Over the years, the Gophers have won the Classic quite a few different times, including a stretch in which they didn't lose between 1999 and 2006 to set the tone for the tournament. Since then, however, other teams have been giving the Gophers a serious run for their money, including wins from Northeastern, Bemidji State, Harvard and more as the reputation of the Mariucci Classic continues to expand.
Mariucci Classic Greatest Moments
After Minnesota dominated from 1999 through 2006, the 2007 Mariucci Classic finally broke the Gophers' winning streak. That year, Boston College ended up putting it all together and taking down the tournament over RIT, leaving the Golden Gophers in third place for the tournament. The Gophers would have their revenge the following year, however, as they beat Northeastern for the championship.
