The Marquette University Golden Eagles women's volleyball team has a long history of excellence on the court. The volleyball program got its start back in 1975 under Coach Tat Shiely, who was also head of the women's basketball team, the first Coordinator of Women's Athletics and a Hall of Famer herself at Marquette. Shiely, who led the team for 24 years, was instrumental in building the volleyball program into what it is today: a team that can book wins. Shiely led her team to numerous 20- and 30-win seasons. More recently, current head coach Ryan Theis is keeping the winning tradition alive. Since taking over from Coach Bond Shymansky in 2014, Theis has only had winning seasons with 20-win records each year. Additionally, Theis has gotten the Golden Eagles to postseason play every year, including both Big East Conference Tournaments and NCAA Tournaments. Theresa Coughlin, Class of 2006, is Marquette's leader in kills (1,733) and attacks (4,365). From the beginning of her career with the Golden Eagles, she did nothing but impress and was eventually named as part of the C-USA All-Freshman Team. For her final three years of play, Coughlin was one of the top-ten attackers in the conference. Additionally, Coughlin was honored with an all-tournament team selection eight times while at Marquette. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. Kathy Andrykowski was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991 for both volleyball and basketball. In 1979, she was captain of the volleyball team and earned the high honor of being the Wisconsin Women's Athletic Conference player four times. She was also a four-year letter winner.

Coach Theis has a rich background in women's volleyball. He began his tenure with the Golden Eagles in 2014. His record at Marquette heading into 2019 was an enviable 119-47, and he has always had at least 21 wins every season he has coached women's volleyball. Before arriving at Marquette, which is his own alma mater, Theis was the head coach of the Ohio University Bobcats. His coaching record there was also impressive (144-54). While with Ohio, he led the Bobcats to four NCAA Championships and four MAC Tournament championships.
