About The Band
First forming all the way back in 1971 under the name "The Warfield Foxes", Martha Davis and the Motels have gone through many changes in name and lineup over the years, but they still retain the musical creativity, vision, ingenuity, and overall fire that made them such a musical icon in the first place. The group moved to Los Angeles in 1975, changing their name to "Angels of Mercy" and subsequently "The Motels" in the process, and from there would work the local circuit and grow their fanbase over the coming years. Although they disbanded temporarily in 1977, they came back with a vengeance the next year and began drawing in more crowds then ever, leading to the group signing with Capitol Records and releasing their debut album "Total Control" in 1979. The album was solid, and they followed this up the next year with "Careful" which fared even better. They continued their streak with "All Four One" and "Little Robbers" in 1982 and 1983 respectively, with their popularity growing with each subsequent release. They closed out their run in the 80's with 1985's "Shock", as they would disband in 1987. But that wasn't the end of the group, as they came back as Martha Davis and the Motels in 1998, and they began releasing more material in the late 00's such as "Clean Modern and Reasonable" and "This", with their most recent being "Apocalypso".
While the group was off to a great start with their first two albums, with some singles charting overseas in countries such as France or Australia, they didn't quite make an impact in America until their third album "All Four One". The album was the group's biggest success, with singles such as "Only The Lonely", "Take The L" and more. They found even more success with this album through the rise of MTV and music videos.
Martha Davis and the Motels Trivia
While "All Four One" was the first album from The Motels that broke through into the mainstream and received some much-deserved attention, it's interesting to know that the album was much different at an earlier point. It was after the band had finished recording the entire album and presented it to Capitol Records before release, it ended up being rejected on account that it was "too weird" and "not commercial enough", causing the group to go back and re-record the entire album. The finished product was a massive success and touted plenty of hit singles that made their way up a multitude of charts, but it would be interesting to see what the album would have been like had the band been album to release it the way they had originally intended.
There are so many hit singles and albums that The Motels are responsible for that it would be hard to cram them all into one performance, but you can rest assured that you'll be getting a great night filled to the brim with the awesome music that everyone loves! Martha Davis and The Motels haven't lost a step over the years, as they still bring the heat with their amazing stage presence and energy that made them famous in the first place.
