A lifetime of food influence
Born in New Brunswick to an engineer and waitress, Matty was destined to find his feet in the food industry, with his mother working in hospitality, but it wasn’t until Matty joined Humber’s cooking programme in 2000 that he established a unique skill in cooking. Despite getting solid grades and showing particular skills in butchery, Matty quit the Humber cooking school in favour of touring with school friends who were in a metal band. It is during this time of his life that Matty was constantly exposed to drugs and alcohol, which sadly led him to experience his well-documented heart attack at the young age of 29. This heart attack acted as a catalyst for him to sort his life out and Matty went sober, recording his first episode of ‘Keep it Canada’ 7 months later. It was this trial show that saw Matty Matheson gain worldwide celebrity chef status, joining fellow personality chefs Eddie Huang, rapper and TV chef Action Bronson and British chef, Gordon Ramsay.
Finding his feet again
It’s fair to say that Matty has battled his demons and really turned his life around, starting with his pilot of ‘Keep it Canada’, and has since enjoyed great success with Viceland’s ‘Suppertime’ show as well as an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's live show, which saw Matty demonstrate his excellent cooking skills to a live TV audience. Matty now enjoys further success as executive chef at one of Canada’s most famous restaurants, Parts and Labour, and enjoys touring the world, sharing his passion for food with his audiences.
