Meltdown Festival 2018: Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, The Libertines and more take to the stage
For the past quarter of a century London's Southbank Centre has played host to Meltdown: an annual summer festival of music, art, performance and film. Since its inception in 1993, the festival has welcomed a different guest musician or artist each year to act as director of the event and pick the performers of their choosing. In 2018, that honour falls to The Cure's award winning frontman and songwriter Robert Smith, who will put his unique stamp on Meltdown's 25th lineup this June.
In confirming acts such as Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, The Libertines, The Psychedelic Furs, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Placebo, Smith has already put together a fine range of established names, while fans can also expect to hear from a raft undiscovered acts worthy of the spotlight next to the world famous River Thames.
"As each invitee confirms, as each shimmering piece falls into place, I pinch myself – this is really happening... and the complete picture will undoubtedly be out of this world!" said Robert Smith, barely able to contain his excitement.

Across the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Hayward, Meltdown has been bringing together an eclectic line-up of music's biggest names for 25 years. Held annually since 1993 (except in 2006 when the Royal Festival Hall was closed for refurbishment), the festival has been directed by the likes of John Peel, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Morrissey and Yoko Ono who have included hundreds of artists from across all genres of music in their lineups.
This year's director, iconic Cure frontman Robert Smith, helped take alt-rock mainstream around the world throughout the 1980s; winning a BRIT Award for Best British Band, an MTV Icon Award, and NME’s Godlike Genius Award along the way.
