Memorial Cup TicketsThe Memorial Cup is an annual tournament that determines the ultimate winner in the Canadian Hockey League, which represents three Canadian major junior ice hockey leagues (the highest level of amateur hockey for players between 16 and 20 years of age). These are the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The Memorial Cup features the three league winners, plus a fourth host team that is selected before the start of the season. Originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup, the tournament was founded to honor the Canadian soldiers who had lost their lives in World War I. Since then, it has expanded to encompass US as well as Canadian teams. The Portland Winter Hawks became the first non-Canadian team to win the cup in 1983. The Spokane Chiefs in Washington State also won the cup in 1991 and 2008. If you want to enjoy the best of Canadian major junior hockey, grab your Memorial Cup tickets at StubHub.
What is the format of the Memorial Cup tournament? The Memorial Cup features a round-robin format. Each team plays every other team once for a total of six games. If two teams are tied for the final spot at the end of the round-robin series, then a sudden death game is played to break the tie. If three teams are tied, then various other tiebreakers come into play. The top team at the end of the round robin automatically advances to the championship game. The next two teams in the round robin play in the semifinals matchup for the chance to face the top team.
