Emily Haines and James Shaw met in 1997, when they began writing songs together. In the fall of 1998, James Shaw and Emily Haines moved to New York to live the starving artist life in Brooklyn, N.Y. They began their career in 2000 by signing their first publishing deal with Chrysalis Records. The album titled Grow Up and Blow Away was set to be the band's debut album, but due to its publishing company pushing the release date back, it wasn't released until 2007. Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? was released in 2003 as the band's first official studio album. "Combat Baby" was featured as the iTunes free single of the week in 2004. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Metric has proven themselves to be a mainstay of the indie rock community.
