About Mexico National Soccer Team

The Mexico National Soccer Team, known to fans as El Tri, has been part of world football since its first international match in 1923. Run by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, the program has qualified for 18 FIFA World Cups and has appeared in every tournament since 1994. The green, white and red kit traces straight to the Mexican flag, which is where the El Tricolor nickname comes from.

Mexico's World Cup story began at the very first tournament in 1930 in Uruguay, where the team played in the opening match and Juan Carreño scored the country's first World Cup goal. The deepest runs came at home: quarterfinal finishes at the 1970 and 1986 World Cups, both of which Mexico hosted. In 1999, Mexico became the first host nation to win the FIFA Confederations Cup, edging Brazil National Football Team 4-3 in the final. Add 13 CONCACAF Championship and Gold Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal at London 2012, and you have one of the most decorated national teams in the region.

Home matches usually run through Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a 1966 landmark that seats 87,523 and remains the only stadium to host two World Cup finals. The team also plays a heavy schedule of friendlies across the United States Men's National Soccer Team, part of the MEXTOUR series that has drawn crowds averaging north of 52,000.

Who are the greatest players in Mexico National Soccer Team history?

Mexico's record books are led by Andrés Guardado, the most-capped player in team history with 180 appearances, and Javier Hernández, the all-time leading scorer with 52 goals. Several other names define the program's modern era:
  • Andrés Guardado: 180 caps between 2005 and 2024, the most in team history.
  • Javier Hernández: 52 goals in 109 caps, Mexico's all-time top scorer.
  • Guillermo Ochoa: 153 caps, a fixture in goal across multiple World Cup cycles.
  • Rafael Márquez: 147 caps and 17 goals across a career that spanned 1997 to 2018.
  • Cuauhtémoc Blanco: 38 goals in 118 caps, one of the most iconic attackers of the 1990s and 2000s.

How many CONCACAF Gold Cups has the Mexico National Soccer Team won?

Mexico has won 13 CONCACAF Championship and Gold Cup titles, the most of any nation in the confederation. Those titles came in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023 and 2025. Mexico has also finished as runner-up three times, in 1967, 2007 and 2021. The regional haul is the cornerstone of the team's trophy case, and it pairs with a 2025 CONCACAF Nations League title and the 1999 Confederations Cup crown.

What are the Mexico National Soccer Team's biggest international achievements?

Mexico's signature achievement is winning the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup, where it beat Brazil in the final and became the first host nation to lift the trophy. The program is also the only team from outside Europe and South America to have won a senior FIFA global competition. Its other milestones include:
  • FIFA Confederations Cup: champions in 1999 and third place in 1995.
  • Copa América: runners-up in 1993 and 2001, including a 1993 final loss to Argentina National Football Team.
  • Olympic football: gold medal at London 2012 with the under-23 side.
  • FIFA World Cup: quarterfinal finishes in 1970 and 1986, both as hosts.
  • CONCACAF Nations League: champions in 2025.
Mexico has long been a measuring stick for the region, and it is unbeaten at home against the United States in competitive matches, with 15 wins and four draws across 19 meetings.

What is it like to follow the Mexico National Soccer Team?

Following El Tri is a year-round ritual. The green, white and red tricolor kit is unmistakable, and the team's fan base stretches well beyond Mexico. A large share of supporters lives in the United States, which is why the MEXTOUR friendly series and matches at venues like AT&T Stadium in Dallas regularly fill with pro-Mexico crowds. Inside Estadio Azteca, the atmosphere is among the loudest in world football, with the stadium's altitude and scale adding to the home advantage. Televisa and TV Azteca carry every Mexico match in Mexico, while Univision and Telemundo serve Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States, making the team one of the most widely watched national sides in the Americas.
