The Miami Marlins play their home games at loanDepot Park, a ballpark in the heart of Miami built specifically for baseball and the franchise's home since 2012. The name carries real local history, honoring the minor league Miami Marlins clubs that played in the city going back to the 1950s, when Hall of Famer Satchel Paige pitched there. Baseball in Miami comes with its own atmosphere: warm-weather nights, a park designed for the game, and a crowd that reflects the city itself. From summertime divisional matchups to interleague clashes with in-state rivals, Marlins tickets deliver a ballgame with a distinctly Miami flavor.
The franchise began play in 1993 as the Florida Marlins, an expansion team that shared Joe Robbie Stadium with the NFL's Miami Dolphins for nearly two decades before moving to its own downtown ballpark and adopting the Miami Marlins name in 2012. The championship story is unlike any in the sport. The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003, becoming the first team to take the title as a wild card and the only franchise to win it all in each of its first two winning seasons. They have never lost a World Series. The 1997 club beat Cleveland in seven games on Édgar Rentería's single in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7, with Liván Hernández named World Series MVP. The 2003 team surged behind rookies Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera and catcher Iván Rodríguez, erased a 3-1 NLCS deficit against the Chicago Cubs, then upset the heavily favored New York Yankees in six games behind Josh Beckett's complete-game shutout in the clincher. Jeff Conine, the original Marlin known as Mr. Marlin, played on both championship teams. Giancarlo Stanton became the first Marlin to win a National League MVP in 2017, and in 2020 Kim Ng became the first woman to serve as general manager of a major American professional sports franchise.
Gameday in Miami has its own identity. The franchise debuted the Marlins Mermaids in 2003 as the first dance and cheer squad in Major League Baseball, an innovation other clubs went on to copy, and followed in 2008 with the Manatees, the league's first all-male dance squad. The team's colors lean into the city with midnight black, Miami blue, Caliente red, and slate grey, and the City Connect uniforms have honored both the Cuban Sugar Kings and Miami's electric glow skyline. In 2022 the club opened Sandy's Beach at Section 22 down the third-base line, a beach-themed cheering section that captures the casual Miami approach to a night at the ballpark. Pair all of that with an intrastate rivalry against the Tampa Bay Rays and you get a fan culture that could only exist in this city.
