Michael Franti is a singer-songwriter, musician, rapper, poet, documentarian and activist. Getting his start in bands like the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and the Beatnigs, he eventually formed his own group in 1994, Spearhead, of which he remains the frontman. A native of Oakland, Calif., he started writing poetry in high school at the prompting of a priest and bought his first bass guitar at a pawn shop. Inspired by the sounds of reggae, punk and hip-hop he was hearing on college radio, he started experimenting with songwriting. Franti tours consistently, bringing his fun, energetic tunes to fans around the world.
