Opening on March 13, 1973, the Minskoff Theatre was named after one of the most distinguished real estate families in New York, Sam Minskoff and Sons. Many award-winning musicals have graced its stage, including West Side Story, Sweet Charity and Cabaret. In 1981, the Minskoff hosted the Miss Universe Pageant. Later, over 200 artisans and craftsmen refurbished the Minskoff Theatre over a six-month period in preparation for Disney's The Lion King, which moved there in 2006 and has remained there through to 2019.
