The Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater was opened in 1967 as the Forum in the lower level of the Vivian Beaumont Theater building. The Forum was renamed in honor of Ms. Newhouse in 1973 after the New York Shakespeare Festival acquired management of the building. During the next seven years, the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater was only sporadically rented out. In 1985, the Lincoln Center Theater took over management. In the years since, the Lincoln Center Theater has become the largest, not-for-profit theater in the US, and the Newhouse Theater is home to a large variety of plays, musicals and special events. The Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater often showcases premieres, some from playwrights like Jon Robin Baitz, Sarah Ruhl and Christopher Durang.
