Most motorsports events are not held in winter, leaving car and truck enthusiasts adrift when the snow flies. Fortunately, Monster Jam offers an opportunity to enjoy year-round truck excitement. Whether it's jumping a line of cars or crushing the competition, Monster Jam is motorsports at its most thrilling. These trucks will get your adrenaline pumping as they plow through dirt and mud to complete a variety of shocking stunts.
Monster Jam contests
While every Monster Jam event is a little different, you can expect two basic competition categories. First, there is head-to-head racing, where drivers compete in a series of races until one champion remains.
Second, drivers compete in freestyle tournaments, which tests creativity, skill and ability to push the limits of their trucks to the extreme. Drivers get 90 seconds - and possibly an additional 30 second bonus period - to perform dramatic feats like flying across long lines of cars, trucks and buses. Even when the trick is unsuccessful, there is a satisfying smash when trucks crush the props below.
Freestyle tournaments are scored using 10 criteria:
The total number of tricks completed
The number of obstacles the truck hits
The length and height of each jump
The number of donuts
The creativity of stunts
The number of near-misses (drivers recover from a potential crash)
Number of wheelies
Number of sky wheelies
Number of combination tricks and stunts
Each of these is scored on a scale from 1-10. Drivers may lose points for using too much or not enough time, truck rollovers, reversing (unless required to deliberately hit an obstacle) and stopping the performance for any reason.
When scores are tied, judges may request audience participation. The winner is decided by a cheer-off, when fans vote with their applause for the best contestant.
Other exciting Monster Jam moments
Some of the smaller Monster Jam events showcase additional competitions focused on specific tricks. Donut contests have trucks speeding in circles until drivers are too dizzy to go on. The winner is the individual that completes the most donuts successfully.
Wheelie competitions are a fan favorite. Using ramps, drivers take their trucks straight up and into the air. Winners are chosen by who goes highest and who stays perpendicular to the ground longest.
The Monster Jam live experience
Your Monster Jam tickets mean fun for the whole family. If you plan to bring younger children along, consider ear protection as this event gets very loud. Venues can be chilly, so jackets are always useful as well. You may wish to keep a few wet wipes handy to offset the mud and dust that makes this event so exciting.
Before the event, be sure to hit the Pit Party, which gives you a chance to see the trucks up close. Their massive size is hard to comprehend until you stand next to them.
