Canadian indie band Mother Mother got its start in 2005 in Heriot Bay, British Columbia, by Ryan Guldemond, then a music school student desiring to form a band that made pop tunes with strong vocals. Playing, at first, with his sister Molly and a college friend as an acoustic trio, the later addition of a drummer and bassist finally gave Guldemond the band he envisioned. Mother Mother went on to be named one of the Top 5 British Columbian bands to pay attention to in 2007. The band's national breakout came with a broadcast performance opening for the Wailin' Jennys and K'naan. They also opened for Cat Empire and played at the Canada Day celebration at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto at the Pop Montreal Festival and for a sold-out crowd at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
Mother, Mother Mother
Initially called simply "Mother" for its complex emotional connotations, the band's self-titled debut album even used that singular form of the word. The band decided to take on the doubled version of its name upon its record label's discovery of so many other bands with the same name. Upon changing its name, the band rereleased its album under the new version of its name, retitling the album Touch Up and adding a few new tracks for good measure. In addition to its audio releases, Mother Mother also produced over a dozen music videos.
