The legacy of Marco Simoncelli
In 2011, motorcycle racer Marco Simoncelli died in a tragic accident at the Malaysian Grand Prix. He was born in the province of Rimini and was one of the most notable race drivers to come from that region. He had been competing for ten years when he died at the tender age of 24. His bike number, 58, was also retired in his memory. Today he is a celebrated name in the Moto Grand Prix – his death shocked the entire racing community and a number of tributes were dedicated to him in the following years. One of the most poignant came in 2012, when the Misano World Circuit was renamed in honour of Marco Simoncelli, keeping his memory alive.
