Motown The Musical Indianapolis Tickets
Motown the Musical
Motown the Musical features some of the most iconic artists from Motown’s heyday. Character portrayals include Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Performers take the stage at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis, singing the legends’ greatest hits and portraying their relationship with Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. The musical was directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and choreographed by Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams.
Berry Gordy’s life and work were hugely influential on the Rhythm & Blues and the rock scene throughout the 60s and 70s. Though he couldn’t play an instrument or read music, he possessed the exceptional ability to promote artists and help them create the sound and style that came to be famously known as Motown. With a talent for songwriting from an early elementary age, Gordy was drawn to the music world like a magnet. Though he attempted other careers—boxing, the Army, factory work—he kept coming back to what he believed to be his calling.
Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959. Almost from the start, Motown generated major hits. Smokey Robinson’s “Shop Around” blasted straight to #1 on the R&B charts. The following year, “Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes hit #1 on the pop charts. The years to come would be overflowing with talent, such as Mary Wells, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and the Supremes. The sibling sensation known as the Jackson Five also had their career launched by Motown Records. Additionally, Gordy developed a branch of Motown to invest in film and television production, which brought forth such popular films as Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues.
