Plot
Motown the Musical follows the story of Berry Gordy, the creator of one of the most influential record labels in history. Gordy founded Motown Records and masterminded the hugely successful careers of artists such as Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson, each of whom is featured in the musical. The show follows their careers and their relationships with Berry Gordy, and features hits from their repertoire, along with classics by other big stars of Motown.
Trivia
Motown started out as two labels, Tamla and Motown, both formed by Berry Gordy, which were merged to create the Motown Record Corporation. This took place in 1959, and the decade that followed was the most successful and notorious for the label. During the 1960s, Motown released music by artists including the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops and The Jackson 5. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, may never have become a star if it weren't for Gordy signing him and his brothers to Motown in 1969. Motown's stars were among the first African-American artists to break out in the U.S. music scene, making it a historically important as well as artistically talented scene.
Cast
The cast for the West End production of Motown the Musical is yet to be announced. In New York, the show was performed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with a cast including Valisia LeKae as Diana Ross and Charl Brown as Smokey Robinson. They were both nominated for Tony Awards for these performances.
Original Author
The book for Motown the Musical was written by Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown himself. It is based on his 1994 autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown. Gordy started out as a songwriter before deciding to invest the profits of his work as a writer into producing records for new artists that he had discovered. Motown the Musical features over 50 hit singles from the 60s and beyond, written by musical talents such as Holland and Dozier, Ashford and Simpson, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder.
