Motown: The Musical Thousand Oaks' background
Motown: The Musical gets its inspiration from Berry Gordy's 1994 autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, in which he details the history of his Motown record label, starting in 1950s Detroit, along with many of its most important moments. The musical opens on a set depicting the Pasadena Civic Auditorium circa 1983, when all the big Motown recording stars have gathered to celebrate the label's 25th anniversary. From this moment, the story is told in flashback form, focusing on Gordy's relationships with the artists he signed to his label and helped rise to fame.
The story elements of Motown: The Musical, however, are kept somewhat sparse, leaving the hit songs of Motown's stars to do most of the entertaining. A total of 66 songs are performed, some in truncated versions, including such massive hits as Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street," Diana Ross' "I Hear a Symphony," The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman," The Jackson 5's "ABC", Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and Smokey Robinson's "My Girl." Other favorite numbers are "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" by the Temptations, "Do You Love Me" by The Contours and "Stop! In the Name of Love " by The Supremes.
Motown: The Musical premiered on Broadway in April of 2013 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran until January 2015, closing after more than 700 performances. The original Broadway production was nominated for four Tony Awards. A national tour of Motown: The Musical kicked off in April 2014. The show had its West End premiere at London's Shaftesbury Theatre in February 2016. It also returned to Broadway for a limited run at the Nederlander Theatre in the summer of 2016.
