Founder Gary Chetkof and Gov't Mule frontman Warren Haynes created the Mountain Jam Festival to celebrate the art of improvisational music. Since its inception in 2004, the festival has grown from a one-day concert celebrating the anniversary of WDST Radio Woodstock to a four-day camping event with three separate stages of music. Mountain Jam is the largest music festival in New York and one of the most important rock festivals in the Northeastern US.
Back to the Jam
Warren Haynes took a break from the festival in 2017 and 2018. During that time, Mountain Jam experimented with a new format to try to appeal to a wider audience. The event broke away from its original jam-rock roots and booked more mainstream artists. While the 2017 and 2018 shows featured epic performances from acts like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and The Steve Miller Band, fans wanted to see the festival return to its original jam-based format. In 2019, Haynes returned to the festival and teamed up with concert promoters Live Nation. Together they launched a successful "Back to the Jam" campaign that took the Mountain Jam Festival back to its roots in improvisational music.

Warren Haynes named the festival after the Allman Brothers Band's 1969 instrumental song, "Mountain Jam." Founding fathers of the Southern rock genre, the Allman Brothers Band played at the Mountain Jam festival for several years. Since the death of frontman Gregg Allman, the tradition has continued in the form of the Allman-Betts Band, which performed during 2019's festival.
How is the Mountain Jam festival related to Woodstock?
The 2019 Mountain Jam Festival was held at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the original Woodstock festival that took place in 1969. Mountain Jam made history as the first festival to allow camping at the Upstate New York site since Woodstock over 50 years ago. Free admission to the Woodstock museum was included with Mountain Jam Festival tickets.
What other activities are there at Mountain Jam?
The 2019 Mountain Jam Festival featured a Ferris wheel. From the top of the ride, festival attendees were treated to views of the legendary venue and the Catskill Mountains. The festival began each day with a morning yoga session. Performing artist Michael Franti led a special yoga session on Sunday morning. The event hosted an exposition of hemp products, crafts vendors and food stalls ranging from gourmet vegan dishes to Southern-style comfort food. Mountain Jam attendees enjoyed beverages in the craft beer hall and adjacent game room.Back to Top
