Located in Murray, Ky., the Murray State Racers basketball has been around for almost a century. The Murray State Racers first year of basketball was in 1925 under coach Carlisle Cutchin, who remained the team's coach until 1941. The Racers have had 15 coaches since then, with the current coach, Matt McMahon, taking over in 2015. McMahon has an 87-42 record so far. Under McMahon, the Racers basketball team has won two Ohio Valley Regular Season Championships and two Ohio Valley Tournament Championships. Since its inception, the Racers basketball team has produced two AP All-Americans and 20 Ohio Valley Players of the Year, with Ja Morant being the most recent and receiving both titles in 2019. Murray State has had 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight NIT appearances, one CIT appearance (which it also won) and seven NAIA Tournament appearances, where the team made it to the final four a total of four times. Jennings played at a time when freshmen couldn't play on the varsity team and still managed to set records in the three years he played. Jennings scored 1,370 points in his career, making him the Racers' No. 18 scorer, and he is also the team's No. 3 career rebounder with 1,147 rebounds. The Racers’ most successful player has been Popeye Jones. Jones holds the No. 1 ranking for rebounds at Murray State, totaling 1,374 in his career. Jones' No. 54 jersey is one of only nine that Murray State has ever retired. Although Jones was a second-round pick for the Houston Rockets, he chose instead to play his first year of professional ball in Milan, Italy. He then spent 11 years playing for various NBA teams before going into coaching. Jones is now an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers. The Racers’ most recent star is Ja Morant. Morant was a star player in the 2019 season and was a No. 2 pick for the Memphis Grizzlies.
