The untimely death of David Bowie came as a shock to his legion of fans across the globe. Now a diverse lineup of performers are coming together to celebrate the late legend's music. The Music of David Bowie is a traveling tribute concert featuring a full slate of iconic Bowie songs in a single night. Past performers include The Flaming Lips, Blondie, Michael Stipe, Mumford and Sons, The Roots, Rickie Lee Jones and Ann Wilson.
The original idea was to host a memorial concert as a tribute to Bowie's artistry, and timeless style. But after high-demand events at both Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, promotors took the show on the road, with performances in Phoenix and Atlanta, one highlight being Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne riding on the shoulders of a Wookie as he sang Bowie classic "Life on Mars."
Music of David Bowie history
The Music of David Bowie tour was conceived by long time concert impresario Michael Dorf. He has produced similar concerts - donating the profits to children's music education - for legendary artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Prince. The original Music of David Bowie show went on sale in New York City only hours after the world learned of Bowie's death in January 2016. It quickly sold out, and several established artists joined the roster of musicians paying tribute to the legend.
Past highlights of the shows also include Cyndi Lauper, who sported a pink wig while singing "Suffragette City." J. Masic from Dinosaur, Jr. and Sean Lennon used two acoustic guitars to put a new twist on the song "Quicksand" from the album Hunky Dory. The show culminates with a children's choir joining the musicians on stage for "Space Oddity."
