The frontman gone solo: Nathan Gray

The boy that set fire to the hardcore world
While becoming a known solo act in his own right, for many Gray will be remembered as the frontman to Boysetsfire—an influential post-hardcore band based in Delaware, who are responsible for classic albums such as ‘After the Eulogy’ (2000) and ‘Tomorrow Come Today’ (2003). As part of the band, Gray revealed how he was influenced by the musicals that regularly provided the soundtrack to his childhood and this unique element of the singer is partly responsible for him becoming a successful and influential solo performer. As the frontman of Boysetsfire, he became the poster boy for the revolutionary songs of the band; however, he has since displayed a more intimate and vulnerable side of his personality. As a recording artist, Gray performs the vast majority of instrumental parts himself but, when performing live, the singer is joined on-stage by close friends and associates to truly bring his music to life. Working Title and Feral Hymns
Coming from a band as popular as Boysetsfire, Gray established his own sound with his 2015 EP ‘Nthn Gry’, combining neofolk and industrial influences to create iconic songs such as ‘Wolves’ and ‘Baptismal Rites’. However, Gray truly defined his sound with his debut album ‘Feral Hymns’ (2018) in which the post-hardcore punk sound was converted into an acoustic style, with Gray originals alongside new versions of songs by Boysetsfire and The Casting Out - another one of Gray’s musical projects. After releasing a live album in 2019, ‘Live in Wiesbaden Ringkirche/Live in Iserlohn Dechenhöhle’, that was recorded between the spectacular German venues of Iserlohn’s Dechen Cave and Ringkirche Wiesbaden, Gray released his second solo album ‘Working Title’ (2019). The album, as the name suggests, refers to his continued growth as both an individual and an artist and drew comparisons with the likes of Matt Skiba and Kevin Seconds.
