The Navy Midshipmen played its first basketball game in 1907 under coach John Finneman. Pete Herrmann, the coach from 1987 to 1992, took the team to its first NCAA conference appearance, and Don Devoe, head coach from 1993 to 2004, led the Midshipmen to three NCAA appearances and three conference tournament championships. Ed DeChillis has been head coach at Navy since the 2011-2012 season. He has led the Midshipmen to 80 wins over the last five seasons and two appearances in the semi-final round of the Patriot League Tournament. Since the basketball program began competing in NCAA basketball, Navy has won eight regular-season conference championships and six tournament conference championships across multiple conferences. The team has appeared in the NCAA tournament 11 times and has been ranked in the AP Poll twice. David Robinson is the only Navy player to date to play in the NBA. He played for the San Antonio Spurs for 14 seasons. During this time, he was a 10-time MVA and 10-time All-Star.
