How does the NCAA select the teams competing in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament?NCAA Division I builds its field of 64 teams for the tournament from two qualifying groups: 31 automatic berths comprised of conference champions and 33 at-large teams. The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee chooses the later 33 teams. It seeds the top eight teams.
How does the NCAA choose its regional host schools? The NCAA chooses the 16 regional hosts from the 64 schools that qualify for the competition. They may also host the super-regional if they advance to the second round of play. Typically, NCAA Division I Baseball Committee chooses the No. 1 seed in each regional tournament as the regional host. The Committee does factor in financial and geographic considerations, too. If a top-eight seed team advances to the next round of play it becomes a super-regional round host, but if it is eliminated, the remaining teams within the bracket bid to host the super-regionals. During the Super Regionals, each team takes a turn as the home team during the round’s first two games. When necessary, the NCAA decides the final game’s home team via a coin flip. Hosting the NCAA Regionals offers two key advantages to a team - home-field advantage and having the final turn at bat.
