The NCAA Women's College World Series is the final round of the NCAA Division I softball tournament, the championship event of college softball's top division. Eight teams advance from a 64-team field to Oklahoma City, where the season ends at Devon Park, located within the USA Softball Hall of Fame complex. The result is one ballpark, eight fan bases, and a national championship on the line.
The tournament dates to 1969, when the first Women's College World Series was played in Omaha, Nebraska. It later passed through Norman, Oklahoma and Sunnyvale, California before settling in Oklahoma City in 1990, a home it has held every year since except 1996, when the event moved to the softball venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Columbus, Georgia. The NCAA added softball among twelve women's sports when it launched its championship program in 1982, and the UCLA Bruins Softball won the first Division I title. Both the NCAA and the AIAW staged a Women's College World Series that year. After the one-year overlap, the NCAA's tournament stood alone as the sport's national championship.
The format is an eight-team double-elimination bracket. Teams are seeded one through eight, with first-round pairings of 1 versus 8, 2 versus 7, 3 versus 6, and 4 versus 5. A wrinkle unique to this event sends the loser of a second-round game on one side of the bracket across to the losers' bracket on the other side. The NCAA College World Series, the men's baseball equivalent, keeps its bracket halves separate until the championship series. The crossover is a signature detail of the softball version. Since 2005, the last two teams have played a best-of-three championship series, one game per day, and the first team to win two games takes the national title.
