NCAA Women's Tournament Regional Kansas CityThe NCAA Women’s basketball competition has become one of the most energetic challenges in the nation. As the prominence of women’s basketball has risen, it has begun to challenge other major sports to earn a spot as one of the top five collegiate sports in America. Alongside football, baseball and men’s basketball, women’s basketball is renowned as a competitive and exciting sport. Each year, colleges from around the nation will battle it out for an opportunity to claim a national title, which is a major honor in any college sport. With a sport like women’s college basketball, the format leaves open the opportunity for programs outside of storied universities to make a run and achieve that legendary feat. In 2018, the first regional round of the NCAA Women’s College Basketball Tournament was held in Kansas City, Mo., and gave several teams who had won their previous groupings a chance to compete for the Final Four and eventually the National Championship. Who hosts the Kansas City Regional?Every year, after traveling through the various lower level portions of the competition, the regional rounds play host to the next set of games. Each Regional is separated geographically and is hosted by a major athletic conference. Typically, these Regionals are hosted by conferences in a similar geographic region. For that reason, the Big 12 Conference hosted the 2018 Regional at Kansas City’s Sprint Center.
Who were the competitors in the Kansas City Regional? The victors from the local groupings will be admitted to the regional to compete in a number of single elimination matches to move forward towards the title. The Kansas City Regional hosted 16 teams in the 2018 tournament: Mississippi State, Nicholls State, Syracuse, Oklahoma State, Maryland, Princeton, North Carolina State, Elon, Iowa, Creighton, UCLA, American, Arizona State, Nebraska, Texas and Maine. These challengers competed against one another to reach the Regional semifinals between Mississippi State, NC State, UCLA and Texas. At this point, with only four teams remaining in each regional, the competition reached the Sweet Sixteen. The final rounds of the Regional competition were held in the Sprint Center to determine the winner of the Regional. Each matchup featured some very impressive teams. In the Kansas City Regional, a perfect scenario arose where the top four seeds were the remaining contestants in the Regional, and the final match of the Regional was between the top seed and the No. 3 seed, UCLA, which had upset Texas. Mississippi State managed to hold off competitive UCLA and win out as the No. 1 seed and made their way on to the Final Four.
Where does the victor go?The victorious team, having proven they are the best in their Regional, goes on to the Final Four. Beating out the other teams in the Regional is no easy feat because you have to prove you are better than 15 other teams by winning four straight games. If you accomplish this, though, you have earned a chance to compete for the title and are one of the four best teams in the country. The 2018 Final Four was held in Columbus, Ohio, in the Nationwide Arena. The competitors were Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Connecticut and Louisville. Both matches in the Final Four went into overtime, but Notre Dame managed to beat Mississippi State in regulation during the National Championship Game.
Which teams are currently projected to play for the championship?In-season rankings only mean so much when it comes to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, but the top challengers are South Carolina, Baylor, UConn and Oregon.
