The Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) is classed as an elite netball competition that takes place in the UK and features competition between ten different teams. While all ten teams hail from either England, Scotland or Wales, they also feature international rosters, including players from Australia, South Africa, Jamaica, Uganda, Fiji, New Zealand and other countries. League games are played between February and June, culminating in semi-final and grand final rounds. Officially sponsored by Vitality and broadcast on Sky Sports since the league's foundation in 2006, Netball Superleague is a highly popular, not-to-be-missed competition for netball fans worldwide.
Netball Superleague's background
The Vitality Netball Superleague first launched in 2006 as an eight-team league. In 2016, the league expanded to include a total of ten teams.
The ten current teams include the Celtic Dragons from Cardiff, Wales; the Hertfordshire Mavericks from Hatfield, Hertfordshire; the Loughborough Lightning from Loughborough, Leicestershire; the Manchester Thunder from Manchester, Greater Manchester; the Severn Stars from Worcester, Worcestershire; the Sirens from Glasgow, Scotland; the Surrey Storm from Guildford, Surrey; Team Bath from Bath, Somerset; Team Northumbria from Newcastle, Tyne and Wear; and Wasps Netball from Coventry, West Midlands.
Some of the most successful teams are Team Bath, with wins in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2013; the Hertfordshire Mavericks with wins in 2008 and 2011; Manchester Thunder with wins in 2012 and 2014; and Surrey Storm, which took home the title in both 2015 and 2016.
Netball Superleague's 2017 contest
The 2017 league contest was an exciting one, with aggressive competition between some of the top teams in the league. With 1,221 total goals scored by the Loughborough Lightning and 1,186 goals scored by Wasps Netball, the competition was bound to be harsh. These two teams ultimately faced off against one another in the final round, signalling that a never-before-victorious champion would take home the title in 2017.
The 19th round, also known as the semi-final round, was played on June 10, 2017. The Loughborough Lightning took on Team Bath, defeating them in a final score of 66-45. Meanwhile, Wasps Netball defeated Manchester Thunder 63-48.
The 20th round was played on June 11, 2017. The Loughborough Lightning and Wasps Netball faced off in the Grand Final, with Wasps Netball emerging victorious with a final score of 55-51 to take home their first title ever in the league.
June 11 also featured a face-off between the semi-final round losers to determine the third and fourth place rankings. Manchester Thunder beat out Team Bath 56-48 to swipe the third-place title.
