Lou Saban was the first head coach for the team, and Clemson quarterback Harvey White was the first player to be signed. The team name Patriots was chosen by a panel of Boston sportswriters after a public contest. The Patriots were the first professional team to issue public stock. The team's first home game in their 1960 inaugural season was played at Boston University Field against the Denver Broncos; the Patriots lost by a score of 13-10. Who is the New England Patriots' major rival?
The New England Patriots’ biggest rival is the New York Jets. Part of the rivalry has to do with the fact that Bill Belichick was the head coach for the Jets for one day in 2000, when he famously quit the post by writing his resignation on a napkin. In 2001, Jets linebacker Mo Lewis injured Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe in the team’s second regular season game, bringing Tom Brady to the fore. The Jets beat the Patriots 10-3 that day, but Brady would later lead the Patriots to their first Super Bowl championship that season. In 2002, Chad Pennington, who began his NFL career with the New York Jets, was credited with saving the Jets' season in a 30-17 win over the Patriots. The Jets would make the playoffs in 2002 while the Patriots didn’t. Eric Mangini left the Patriots’ staff in 2006 to become the head coach of the New York Jets. He was famously locked out of the building when he returned to Gillette Stadium to get his personal belongings. Later that year, the Jets beat the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in a 17-14 score. Coach Mangini and coach Belichick shared a cold handshake after the game. In January 2007, the two coaches shared a hug after the Patriots beat the Jets in an AFC wild card game at Gillette Stadium in a 37-16 score. Late in the 2010 season, the Patriots humiliated the Jets 45-3 on Monday Night Football. However, the Jets would later get their revenge in the playoffs, beating the Patriots 28-21 in a divisional round game at Gillette.
