New Orleans Bowls TicketsOn Dec. 21, 2019, the 19th Annual New Orleans Bowl will be played on the turf of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The inaugural game was played on Dec. 18, 2001. In this matchup, Colorado State beat North Texas by 25 points in front of a crowd of 27,004 people. While the Mountain West Conference was a tie-in for the inaugural game, the New Orleans Bowl now has a team from the Sun Belt Conference face an opponent from Conference USA. In addition to the football matchup, there are several associated activities during game weekend. For example, there's a Friday Night Concert (Cole Swindell and Dustin Lynch were the featured acts in 2018). The 7th Annual two-mile race Dashing Through The Dome is going down once again too. Who are some of the previous winners of the New Orleans Bowl?After winning the first New Orleans Bowl, North Texas repeated the next year with to 24-19 win over Cincinnati. In 2003, North Texas returned yet again only to be beaten by Memphis 27-17. They also lost in 2004, this time to Southern Miss 31-10. Since then, Southern Miss also won in 2005, 2008 and 2016. In 2018, Appalachian State beat Middle Tennessee by a whopping 32 points with a final score of 45-13.
What players have been named MVP of the New Orleans Bowl?In 2001 Justin Gallimore was the first MVP as the defensive back of Colorado State. Since then most of the MVPs have been quarterbacks. For example, Memphis' quarterback Danny Wimprine took his place as MVP in 2003. The 2006 MVP was Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook. This was followed by quarterback Rusty Smith from Florida Atlantic the next year. The 2009 MVP spotlight shone on Middle Tennessee's quarterback Dwight Dasher. In 2010, the MVP was Troy's quarterback Corey Robinson. Louisiana quarterback Blaine Gautier won in 2011. The only game to reach overtime was in 2008 when Southern Miss defeated Troy 30-27. Having won the Sun Belt Conference title, Troy was considered a favorite over Southern Miss, which started the season at 2-6. Southern Miss was down 27-17 going into the fourth quarter. However, a late rally sent the game into overtime. A 39-yard field goal sealed the win in front of a crowd of 30,197 fans.
