Built in 1838, the New Orleans Fairgrounds and Racetrack is one of the nation's oldest entertainment venues. It gives you the chance to get tickets to the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and to some of the other fun shows scheduled throughout the year. The on-site dirt track hosts a number of races each year, while the clubhouse is home to dozens of slot machines that let you try your luck. When you look at the schedule of events for the venue, you'll find races as well as the jazz festival, which runs for three full days or more. Is the New Orleans Fairgrounds and Racetrack accessible by public transportation?
To reach the fairgrounds without bringing your car, you can use public transportation. The fastest route is the one that stops at Tropical Isle Original, which will reach the fairgrounds in approximately 25 minutes. Omni Royal Orleans also has a route that gets you to the fairgrounds in less than 30 minutes. Though you can hop on the buses that depart from Audubon Park and the Mississippi River, those routes will take longer.
Is there on-site parking?
Those attending New Orleans Fairground and Racetrack events will find plenty of parking available in the venue's on-site lots. When you visit to check out the slots in the clubhouse and on other regular days, you can park for free. The track only charges parking on days when races are scheduled. Parking prices on those days will vary. Interstate 6-10 makes it easy to get to the fairgrounds from the airport and other locations in town. You'll find signs for the fairgrounds on the highway and other signs on the road that point to the parking lots.
Can you tell me about the food and drink offerings?
Lunch specials are available every day in the clubhouse and in select locations around the venue. When you arrive, you can check in and view those specials. Guests can also choose from a wide variety of snacks and drinks.
Are there other entertainment options nearby?
You shouldn't have any problems finding some fun things to do near the fairground because it's only 10 miles from the French Quarter. If you plan a trip during Mardi Gras, you can watch all the fun from the streets or your favorite bar. The French Quarter is also home to a number of historic sites and some buildings that locals claim are haunted.
Should I call a sitter, or can I bring the young ones along?
Though you can bring your children, any child aged 15 or under cannot be in the venue without an adult. Children are allowed on race days and other days. Kids cannot enter the Miller Lite Beer Gardens or visit the slots area, even when accompanied by an adult.Back to Top
