About New York Liberty
The New York Liberty have been part of the WNBA story since day one. Founded in 1997 as one of the league's eight original franchises, the Liberty signed college superstar Rebecca Lobo before their first game and reached the WNBA Finals in their inaugural season, the first of four Finals trips in the league's first six years. Point guard Teresa Weatherspoon's halfcourt buzzer-beater in the 1999 Finals remains one of the most replayed shots in league history. Those early teams ran into the Houston Comets dynasty and the Los Angeles Sparks, but they set the franchise tone: big stages, big moments, and a crowd that shows up.
After most of two decades at Madison Square Garden and a three-season stop at the Prudential Center in Newark, the Liberty changed hands in 2019 when Joe and Clara Wu Tsai purchased the team. Beginning with the 2020 season, New York made Brooklyn's Barclays Center its full-time home, uniting the franchise with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets under shared ownership.
The Brooklyn era delivered the breakthrough. A franchise-shaping 2023 offseason brought Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Courtney Vandersloot to New York, and the Liberty won a franchise-record 32 games and reached the WNBA Finals. They matched those 32 wins in 2024, earned the top seed in the playoffs, and won the first WNBA championship in franchise history by defeating the Minnesota Lynx, with Jones named Finals MVP and the city throwing the team a ticker-tape parade. From the founding seasons at the Garden to a title in Brooklyn, Liberty tickets have framed the entire arc of the WNBA's history.
