Newsies the Musical
Disney’s Newsies the Musical is about a group of disenfranchised youth who take on a powerful mogul—and win. This exciting production is a creative collaboration between award-winning composer Alan Menken, lyricist Jack Feldman and librettist Harvey Fierstein. It features Tony Award-winning choreography and show-stopping songs such as “Seize the Day” and “King of New York.” Newsies is family-friendly entertainment that appeals to all age groups.
In the pre-dawn hours of a summer day in 1899, down-and-out newspaper boy Jack Kelly is preparing for another day of deliveries on New York’s Lower East Side. He soon discovers that New York World media mogul Joseph Pulitzer has raised the cost of doing business for Jack and his fellow newsboys. Incensed, Jack organizes a strike. What follows is a hard-fought battle that generates heartbreak, bruised-but-not-broken spirits and even a budding romance.
The musical production was preceded by a 1992 film version produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega in his directorial debut. The movie and the musical are inspired by actual events – the New York Newsboys Strike of 1899. It was orchestrated by orphans and runaways who depended on newspaper sales for their survival.
Newsies is a not-to-be-missed evening of thrilling musical theater at Calgary’s Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. The theater is owned by the Alberta government and underwent an extensive renovation in 2004. The Jubilee Auditorium is part of a local initiative to promote the arts and culture. The venue offers two parking lots and is accessible to public transit C-Train systems Crowfoot and Somerset/Bridlewood. The Jubilee C-Train stop is located behind the building.
