Set right in the middle of the American heartland, the NHRA Heartland Nationals is an exciting showdown of the top drag racers in the world. The three-day event features competitors from both the Mellow Yellow Drag Racing Series — the top division of the NHRA — and the Lucas Oil Series. It consists of several different professional and sportsman classes, including Top Fuel, Funny Car, Super Stock, Top Alcohol Dragster, Super Gas, Super Street and much more. Each class features different vehicles, different racers and different rules. Class eligibility is based on factors such as engine size, vehicle weight, allowable modifications and aerodynamics. In the fastest Nitro classes, which include Top Fuel and Funny Car, the vehicles regularly exceed 300 mph. The results of the race count toward the NHRA’s national championship standings. When will the NHRA Heartland Nationals take place?

The 2020 NHRA Heartland Nationals is scheduled to take place June 12–14, right in the middle of the NHRA season. The races will occur constantly throughout the day, from morning to evening. A more detailed schedule should be released closer to the start of the event.

What is the format of the NHRA Heartland Nationals?

In order to compete for top honors, the racers must progress through several different stages. The first stage of the event is the qualifying round. This always takes place on the first or second day of the Heartland Nationals schedule. The racers with the top times in the qualifying rounds then progress to the elimination rounds. These consist of one or two initial rounds, then a semifinals and a grand finale at the end. The elimination rounds begin on the second day and wrap up on the last day. Racers compete against each other in one-on-one competitions. The top finishers are then brought to the main winner’s circle for a final celebration and ceremony. Every class tends to adhere to this basic format.

What is the Heartland Motorsports Park like?

Located on the south side of Topeka, the Heartland Motorsports Park is a multipurpose racing facility that covers 650 acres. The centerpiece of the park, at least for the Heartland Nationals, is the NHRA-sanctioned quarter-mile drag strip. Other parts of the facility include a 2.5-mile road course, a motocross track and a banked clay oval. Originally opened in 1989, the park has been the site of several record-breaking performances, including the quarter-mile four second and 300 mph barriers in the 1993 Funny Car competition. The grandstands are located on the north side of the race course. Fans will also have direct access to the pits during the race.
