What are Funny Cars?Funny Cars are a unique type of vehicle designed specifically for drag racing. Named for the unique bodies that flip open, Funny Cars are powered by 500 cubic inch Nitro HEMI engines with superchargers. They produce over 10,000 horsepower and are cable of reaching speeds of 320 MPH. Their body designs resemble current production cars such as Chevy Camaros, Dodge Chargers and Ford Mustangs.
What types of racing can I see at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals?At the NHRA Route 66 Nationals, you will be witness four professional classes of drag racing: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Each class competes in four rounds of single eliminations until a winner of the event is determined. The winner of each class will be presented with the iconic Wally trophy.
What is the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series?The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is the professional drag racing series in the United States. The series consists of 24 national events that span from February to November. The first 18 events operate as a regular season where the top drivers with the most points go on to compete in the Countdown to the Championship. The Countdown to the Championship consists of the final six events and acts as a playoff. The winner of each of the four pro classes in the Countdown to the Championship will be crowned NHRA class champion. Each season begins and ends in Pomona, Calif.
What are the Sportsman classes?Aside from the four pro classes, spectators at the Route 66 Nationals will be witness to countless Sportsman racers competing in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. The Sportsman races will take place in between the pro classes. Sportsman racers are the weekend warriors. They are amateur racers who compete not for the money but for the love of drag racing. They drive classic Camaros, vintage Mustangs, old school Plymouths and other hot-rodded muscle cars in various classes. They hold regular nine-to-five jobs during the week and spend their weekends chasing quarter-mile bragging rights. Some of the fan favorite sportsman classes are Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Street and Top Alcohol.

You can get up close to the race cars. You can marvel at their advanced V-8 engines and technology. You will also have many opportunities to meet with drivers throughout the day.
